Come, bring your dogs and join the family fun at Duneland Resale’s Bark for Life on Sunday, June 9, 2013, from 1-4 p.m. at the Duneland Community Center/Duneland Resale, 801 Broadway, Chesterton.

Dogs and owners will join in a casual one-mile stroll beginning at Resale. Offerings include delicious treats for pets and people, pet attractions and services, such as identification microchips, and rescue groups. Best Buddies Pet Food Pantry will be accepting donations that day.

Registration is $10 per dog; $5 for a second dog. Each dog will receive a colorful bandana. Applications for profit and not-for-profit booths are available at Duneland Resale (Hours: Tuesday-Friday, 10-4:00 p.m. and Saturday, 9-noon. Reins of Life Inc. will be holding a volunteer orientation session on Wednesday June 5 from 5:30 to 9:00 at their Michigan City facility located at 9375 W 300 N Michigan City, Indiana 46360.  Reins of Life provides therapeutic horseback riding lessons for children and adults with disabilities, serving over 500 riders through its two facilities in northwest Indiana. The organization is looking for volunteers to help assist their riders during riding lessons. Pre-registration is mandatory and volunteers must be at least 13 years old. No previous horse experience is required.

VALPARAISO, Ind. - The fight against cancer has gone to the dogs as the American Cancer Society’s 2013 Bark For Life and Dachshund Derby event takes place on Saturday, June 1 at Canine Country Club, 3554 Sturdy Road, Valparaiso. Area pooches, with owners in tow, will take to the track to dig up a cure for cancer. Bark For Life adds a twist to the Society’s traditional Relay For Life event, serving as a fundraising activity to honor the care-giving qualities of canine companions while supporting the mission of the American Cancer Society.
 
This noncompetitive walk will offer something fun for everyone with demonstrations, silent auction, pet photographer, adoptable pets, and refreshments. The Dog Walk and Open Play will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. with the Dachshund Derby starting at 1 p.m. Event organizers are still recruiting dogs and their owners to take part in this year’s Bark For Life. Register early at Canine Country Club or Brown Tire, 2404 Calumet Ave., Valparaiso. Funds raised through Bark For Life support the American Cancer Society’s comprehensive cancer-fighting mission to help people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early, to help people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis, to find cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery, and to fight back against cancer by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight.

Beginner Obedience Class:
The Dunes Dog Training Club's next Beginner Obedience class will start on June 19th.  This class is for dogs 6 months of age & older; cost for the class is $90.00 for the 8 week session.  Owners must bring proof of their dog's current vaccinations on the first night; dogs should be wearing a metal training collar, attached to a 6 ft leather leash.  Experienced instructors teach owners how to train their dogs, using positive reinforcement only, in the form of treats & praise.  Classes are held at the club building, located at 110 N. Puppy Obedience Class:
The Dunes Dog Training Club's next Puppy Obedience class will begin on June 26th.  This class is for puppies 2-6 months of age; cost for the class is $80.00 for the 7 week session.  Owners must bring proof of their puppies current vaccinations on the first night; puppies should be wearing a flat, buckle-type collar attached to a 6 ft leather leash.  Experienced instructors teach owners how to train their puppies in very basic obedience, using only positive reinforcement in the form of treats.  Classes are held at the club building, located at 110 N. The all-day event at Pick-Ups Bar and Grill, 21000 Torrence Avenue, Lynwood, Illinois, 2pm-Midnight, is to help raise money for a nonprofit rescue that has fosters being kept in peoples homes till adopted out. With help of donations it pays for the cost of fixing the animal along with shot and other medical attention needed.  There will be four bands playing along with raffles.
Bands playing: Jimmy Warren, Gerhart, Thumb, and Butterfly in traffic. Fun for whole family.
